Looks can be deceiving........

Such a beautiful bike... it is blue and cute..great looking tires and everything matches.... but this bike can be deceiving... this bike has been my torture for the last two weeks... yes.. torture..

Some people call riding the bike trainer sufferfest.. I am calling it the Torture Machine. After three months of not riding a bike, I was really sore... the 15 minute warm-up was the longest 15 minutes ever.. in fact... I had thoughts of quitting... but I didn't...

This week, the bike ride was a little better and not as hard... so I will keep on going.. soon, I will be riding my bike trainer for a couple of hours to build up to 56 miles...

I am crazy person...

This crazy person is going to keep on training! I have a half ironman to train for..

Until next time!

Christmas Party!!

So the last few months, I have been tracking my calories, exercising and trying to eat right. But each week, I always have one night where I don't track anything.. Yesterday was that day! I had my favorite cake: Betty Crocker yellow cake with chocolate frosting... yummy! And a Christmas Party with the best neighbors... Last night was the first time in a long time that my hubby and I enjoyed the alcohol just a little too much.. wine and beer and I think I had some vodka. It was such a great night and we didn't even have to drive home.. we walked hand in hand back to our house and fell asleep.. I am glad I give myself that free day... I think I would have  just gone way over board if I didn't... but what does that have to do with training for a triathlon?.....

Today, I had to run 5 miles and I wasn't sure how it would go.. The run was great! I kept pushing myself to run faster than 13 min/mile pace...yes I am slow..That is why I am the speedy turtle..:)

The first mile was hard because I still felt some of the effects of the alcohol the night before, but as I kept on running I felt stronger. It felt great! I know that when I run my next half marathon in March, I will finish under 3 hours...Here are my stats recorded on my Garmin. Untitled by Eling_Kim at Garmin Connect - Details

Having fun and still training is something I am going to keep on  incorporating into my life because I am having fun and liking what I do, I just won't have as much alcohol to drink..  image if  I hadn't drank last night how my run would have been...

Have a great day!

Day 4 of Tri Training

Today was Day 4 and I almost made an excuse to not ride my bike on the trainer...

Some of my excuses that ran through my head:
 - I worked out on Mon, Tues and 2 workouts on Wed
 - I need to finish the Christmas letter
 - My tush is sore and missing one day won't hurt
 - Don has to ride the trainer, so I can't ride at the same time
 - It will be late before we will eat
 - FINALLY... my go to excuse, I have to pick up Donnie and I won't be able to ride...

Well, I did ride tonight and the reasons why I did were:
-I am training for a half
-I have to lose weight for the Biggest Loser
 - The BIGGEST Reason I did the ride....
     - I did this for myself because I set a promise to myself... I am going to workout and start leading a healthier life and exercise...

So, I did it.. It hurt, I wanted to quit, but I did it!

Have a great day!

Wacky Jacks!!!!

This has become my favorite exercise in the P90x Lean program. Tonight is week 5 Day 2 and we worked out to Cardio X!! Very hard workout!! I always have fun when Tony says, "Now, lets do Wacky Jacks!"...

What is Wacky Jacks????

WACKY JACKS
Works: shoulders, abs, obliques, butt, thighs
wacky jacks

Stand with your feet hip-width apart; raise your arms to your sides, elbows bent, palms facing forward. Hop onto your right foot as you swing left leg out to the side as high as you can, bending your torso to the left (as shown). As your left leg swings back to the floor, hop onto your left foot, bending your torso to the right. Continue, alternating sides, for 1 minute. Horton’s hint: The sillier you look, the better!

You look like a wacky jack in the box. I always giggle to myself and have so much fun! It is ok to be silly and work out..

So, as I continue with my venture with P90x... I am going to continue with my Wacky Jacks! Who knows... maybe I will finish a triathlon with a Wacky Jack!

Have a great night!

A day of indulgence and now....

So this past weekend, I went to a wedding and at the reception the menu was Gus's Famous Fried Chicken and Gigi's cupcakes.. Yummy!!! Two of my favorite bad foods

Before the wedding, I went for a run, so I wouldn't feel too guilty about eating the fried chicken and the cupcakes. The run was great! I ran 6 miles, cleaned up and then tried on a dress I hadn't worn in 5 years because it was too small. The dress fit and I was soo excited!!! You would think wearing the dress I would not give in to the fried chicken and cupcakes.. well... I wasn't. See... I am addicted to food. Salty foods are my downfall. I ate the chicken and then that night I went out drank two beers and ate tortilla chips, queso and a pretzel. Yes, when I indulge... I INDULGE!!!! The next day, I felt bloated.

Instead of saying I will start again tomorrow with calorie counting,  I went back to counting calories and ate healthy! I even worked the menu for the rest of the week. I wasn't going to let one day ruin the last 6 weeks!

Today, I was craving some fried chicken, so I drank some water and realized that I wasn't hungry, I was just thirsty.

This is a hard journey of learning to eat but I am not going to beat myself up. I know I will have bad days, I just need to let it go and move on.

Here's to learning more about myself!

Moving forward!

P.S. I tried P90X Kenpo X and I loved it! Can't wait until I do this again!

Week one down!!!!

I survived week 1 of P90X. I didn't think I would do it but I think I am hooked. I have dropped 4 lbs since starting the workout and the diet. Last Friday night, I had a date night with my husband... we did Yoga X for 1 hour 30 min! That was one of the hardest workouts that I have done but I had fun.

I am excited to see what will happen next.. I am still floppy around like a sea lion when I do the banana to super man..but I am doing it. As Tony Horton states:
It is time to BRING IT!!!!!

Until next week!

Day 2..Cardio X

Yesterday was Day 2 of P90x. I actually felt pretty good about going into Day 2 of the workout because it was Cardio X. This should be a breeze... I mean, I have been doing cardio work for the last year now with my triathlon training. In fact,I just finished an Olympic Distance Triathlon. I got this.....

Well, it kicked my butt. My heart rate didn't get above 130 but muscles that I don't use for triathlon training were being used. We did yoga, kenpo, jump rope and my new favorite exercise, the wacky jumping jacks.

I crashed and it took my husband to wake me up this morning. I didn't hear anything when he got up at 4:30. I guess, my body was exhausted from the workout.

I am looking forward to today's workout: shoulders, arms, and abs..

Have a great day!

Day 1.....

Wow... today was Day 1 of the P90x workout! My husband and I have are taking a break from triathlon training, in the off season, to get stronger and to lose weight...

The workout was hard! This workout was just working on my core and I sweated as if I was running 3 miles. I cooked dinner and scarfed it down! Wow! This reminded me of when I used to work with Alana Sweetwood! Everything she did was 100 reps.

During this workout, I tried to roll like a banana to a superman and I looked like a floppy sea lion, then I had to do walking push-ups. I think I scooted on my hands and feet. If someone was looking at us, I think they would have died laughing. I know,  I am laughing just thinking about it.

The best part of the workout was the end! My husband looked at me and told me, he was very proud of my. That made me feel like I can continue this and get up tomorrow for Day 2..

So, I am going continue and believe in myself and make this work!

Believing in myself!

Moving to the off season... What do I do?!?!

At the Finish Line
Over the Labor Day Weekend, Don and I drove to Des Moines, IA to complete the 5150 Championships! Yes, we both qualified at Memphis in May and we were really excited to do this race. Last year, Don had such a great time that I wanted to make sure I qualified. I did, as an over 40 female Athena....

The race was the best race that I had ever completed! This was the first time, I ran the entire run portion and not die.Though...during the swim, I swear, I drank more water than I did on the bike and run. Every time I got into a rhythm, I had someone come up behind me and nearly drown me.. When I got out of the water, I said, "Keep on going!!! You know you are ready for the bike and the run!.." That is what I did. My bike was the fastest bike ride I ever had and I killed it on the run! I had such a blast crossing that finish line.. When I looked up, I had a PR of 20 minutes from my last Olympic distance triathlon and this was a harder course.... What a way to finish the season!

So, now what do I do next?!? I talked with my coach and she recommended, that I take a break from triathlon training.. what, stop training? I just got the hang of this again... Well, after chatting about this over lunch and then on the phone, I realized that it is a good thing to take a break so, I won't get tired of running, biking and swimming... So, what should I do??

So, I still wanted the intensity of the triathlon training and the closest thing I thought would be P90X.. Yes, I will start the P90X workout! In addition, I will still try to fit in a run, bike and swim... So the next 90 days, this Speedy Turtle will be building up her strength! I hope to be able to do at least one pull-up.. I think this will be a lot of fun! In my 30's, I did a lot of strength training and I was addicted to getting more and more muscles....

I will try to keep this updated more often..  So.. on to the next journey of training..

Back on track!

So, it has been awhile since I last posted on here. A lot has been going on. I think the last post, I was just about to complete in the MIM Olympic Triathlon. Well,  I did and it went ok. I didn't finish as fast as I wanted to. I hated the run, I walked most of the 10k. After that, we finished buying our house and we moved, so my training was interrupted. After moving into the new house and unpacking, my training started to pick up. I started to learn to run a little faster and I was being more consistent in my training. I am not sure what changed because the last few months  I have been inconsistent. I am glad I am back on track. I am really enjoying the training and I want to keep pushing myself. So, here's to a fresh new start... New house and new attitude...

Time to keep on training.....

Busy Week of Training!

What a week! This week I completed all of my workouts from Mon-Friday and then on Saturday I volunteered for a great cause!  My runs were great because I am starting to have negative splits but I am still not fast fast... I am still moving along like a turtle.  I am just happy that I am starting to run again. Then on Friday, I had to get up early.... I am not a morning person..  I love my sleep... I got up and took my son to swim practice and completed a timed swim.  I had to swim a mile.  All I could think was.... How am I going to do this?  I must be crazy.... Silly me.. I jumped in and started my song..."99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer...." and next thing I know, I was done.  39 minutes later, I swam an extra 50 yards. I was done.. Whoo hoo! I had never really timed myself before and when I did the calculations for Memphis in May's Olympic distance, I was DEFINITLY going to have a PR.. Whoo Hoo!  Today, was a long run and I started out REALLY.....slow....then I picked up some speed.  I think I was running faster because I saw dark clouds in the sky... Well. .... I didn't run fast enough... I got wet... I am now a true runner.. I continued to run and a block from my house, Don came and picked me up... I had finished running 6.88 miles and it felt great. I was drenched but I felt good... Maybe, next week, when I run the half marathon, it will be a success... I am nervous but I know, I can do it!

It has been a busy week and I know next week will be just as busy! Have a great week!

Happy training!

Happy Easter!

This weekend has been a great weekend for celebrating the beauty of nature!

On Saturday, I rode my bike for 35 miles and enjoyed the spring flowers, the squirrels and the trees all blooming and turning green!

Today, was a day of celebration and renewal so, I went on a 7 mile run. The run was one of the best  runs I have had in a long time. I took the time to reflect and understand why I do this.

I am running, swimming and biking to make myself better. Every time I finish, I feel happy and strong! I have spent too many years not liking myself, not believing in myself and feeling bad about myself. I had a very low self-esteem. This new lifestyle that I am learning has helped me feel better.  I will continue to train. Exercising is now becoming a lifelong habit for me. I like what I am doing....

Thank you to all of my friends and supporters, you have been kept me going.

Happy Training!

Busy last few days....

So, the last few days have been very busy for me. Starting on Sunday, I was playing nurse to my son, who had a bike crash. I felt sooo bad. The two of us went on a bike ride and Speedy Gonzalez (my son) takes off.. so, I continue on my turtle ride and I finally catch up to him... needless to say.. he had a crash. He slipped on gravel and got a good road rash on his thigh, ankle and elbow. I called my hubby and no answer and a nice man drove by and took my son home and I raced home. I wasn't a turtle then. I was peddling so fast to get home because I wanted to make sure my son made it home safely. He did.. I was only 2 minutes behind them the whole ride. It is amazing how much strength a mom can have when she is worried about her offspring. I got home and just broke down into tears... I was so scared for my son that I blamed myself for not riding faster... I should have been there to caution him... I was just soo upset...My son looked at me weird and said.."These things happen...I am alright".. Wow... he was comforting me instead of the other way around.. So, the bike is fine. We will take it to the local bike shop to fix it and he will be back on the bike again on Sunday.

Monday was supposed to be a rest day but I didn't get my run in on Sunday, so I ran 3 miles on Monday. It felt really good. My average speed was an even 13 min/mile. I didn't do the long run because on Tuesday, I had to run 20 min intervals for 60 minutes with negative splits. That was fun.. it was raining, so my friend, the treadmill and I got together to run. My interval pace was for the first interval was 4.6 on the treadmill and 4.9 on my Garmin, the second interval was 4.8 on the treadmill and5.0 on the Garmin and the last interval, was 5.0 on the treadmill (holding the railings a couple of times) and 5.3 on the Garmin. That belt kept my feet moving. My foot cadence was averaging about 85 spm.

Run little feet run....

Wednesday night was swimming with the masters swim group and that was an awesome swim! The total was about 2100 meters and it was the first time I felt like I was finally gliding in my freestyle stroke.. We have been doing a lot of freestyle stroke drills and I need them. I am like a windmill in the water going nowhere..I am a sight to see and last night, I slowed down and I was gliding.. I hope this lasts.. I know I will get tired and windmill again.. but I just need to be persistent...I have to keep on reaching forward to move ahead..

This morning came early, 4:30 am... and I took my son to swim practice and I jumped on the treadmill and ran for 45 minutes. I am so glad I did. It felt great! I hope I will be able to get on the bike on the road this afternoon, if not, the trainer and I will meet up again.

This Speedy Turtle has been busy.. trying to stay accountable and keep moving...

Have a great day everyone!

Spring is here!

This week has been a great week of training and enjoying the outdoors. I did intervals on Tuesday, ran 2 miles on Wednesday followed by swimming and then yesterday I rode my bike. The bike ride was the best... I tried out my bike with my new tires and I felt like I was blowing in the wind.

I am so happy for the warm weather!

Nutrition for the Speedy Turtle...

WHICH DO I CHOOSE????!!!!

So, over the last few weeks, I have been training for the Germantown Half Marathon. During my long runs, Coach Lesley has stated Remember Nutrition... On one of those runs, I forgot nutrition, went for a 2 hour run and bonked at 1.5 hours.. I forgot nutrition.. I guess it didn't help that I had only breakfast, skipped lunch and then went for a the run. This was not very smart...

Why do we need nutrition for endurance? Per an article I read on  Beginning triathlete website " .....energy gels are utilized by endurance athletes to provide a quick boost of energy. They are small and portable. Most gel packs are easily tucked in small pockets or other nooks where a little bit of space is available. Endurance athletes can perform well on the body’s stored up energy supply for only so long. After these stores are depleted, this extra energy requirement has got to be made up somehow. Eating solid foods in the middle of strenuous exercise can be a recipe for a disaster for some athletes – can you say “gutbomb”? Energy and blood tied up in digestion cannot be used for more essential activities like providing energy to the muscles and cooling the body. Energy gels attempt to solve this problem. All energy gels contain a large portion of energy producing complex and simple carbs. Proteins and fats are slow to absorb and can sit in the stomach, so you won’t find a whole lot of them in gels. Their sole function is to get into your blood stream and do it as quickly as possible."

So, the next run, I tried GU ROCTANE. My husband and Coach Billy use them all of the time. I think their favorite is Cherry Lime, especially when you mix it with a coke/diet coke. So, I had a long 2 hour run and I took some Orange Vanilla GU ROCTANE.. I wasn't ready to try the Cherry lime just yet and there was only 2 left.. I had to save if for the hubby.. At mile 7, I tried a little bit... and it felt like  it was stuck on my tongue.. I thought I looked like the dog trying to swallow peanut butter... hmm.. not good.. I took in some water.. and tried again 5 minutes later... it didn't get better....I was going to try to get this down.. so, I took in more water and I got it down...I was determined and I took One last Swallow... and the thick, gooey texture... just didn't work.. I finished run.. It was a good run, but my trial of GELS.. failed again... see a few years ago.. I tried the earlier versions of gels and they were too sweet and gooey, so I stopped trying until now.

I didn't want to give up. I needed to find a better solution than cutting up oranges and watermelon and stuffing them in a pouch.. So, I talked to Coach Lesley and she suggested Powerbar Energy Gels...She said it was more fluid like and the flavor is not soo sweet.. She gave me two gels to try, Strawberry Banana and Tangerine... The Strawberry banana tasted like a strawberry banana shake. Then the Tangerine tasted like the real thing... Also, the energy I felt was WOW... I have never finished a gel before because of the consistency and the taste, but now I think it will be different. I will take a gel before I start the half marathon and then again at mile 4, 7 and 10. I want to finish strong this weekend. Also, I don't have to worry about gooey mushy watermelon and orange slices. I can get those at the end of the race.

Happy training,
Eling

Staying on Track...

Yesterday, I set a new goal for myself... I decided to follow and complete all of my workouts...I confessed to Lesley and then I asked for her help!.. That was the best decision ever. I asked her to help me stay accountable and she did.

Today was day 1 of my new goal and I was encouraged by Lesley to go run. I am  so glad I went for  a run. It felt awesome. I ran for 30 minutes and did my hill set. I am starting to get a little faster and I am not dreading my run anymore. My workout was warm-up for 5 min, 4x2 min at a 3% incline and then finish the run the last 10 minutes.

I am so glad I went for the run, I know I will be ready for next week's half marathon. Thank you Lesley for helping me get back on track!

Happy Training,

Past Month.. I was a Swim Mom and Swim Taxi...

So the last month, I have been really busy... training??? I tried to get in a workout as much as possible.. I had to because I am training for the Germantown Half marathon.. so what have I been doing?? Well, I have been supporting my son, Donnie! Actually, he was the one that convinced me to get back into the swing of exercising again and to do my first triathlon.

Here is my son! He has kept me busy. For the first week, we had county championships and he did great! Then the week after, I drove him to Nashville, TN to take him to the TN state High School championships! My son is a freshman and made state.. I am such a proud mom!  We had one week break and last weekend we were in Knoxville, TN for USA Swimming Southeastern Championships. That was a great weekend for my son. He dropped in all of his strokes except for his breast stroke. He finally realized he should be swimming the fly... So he will now start training as a butter-flyer.

So, I know this is suppose to be about me, but my life really involves a lot with my son and husband, so today's post is for my son. He has been my biggest cheerleader in my training and keeps pushing me to continue to do my workout. He has even given me swimming advice.. see, I don't swim very fast...

So, here's to my son! Thank you Donnie for being my biggest fan!

Happy Training!

Power of Healing through Running!

Today was one of the best days for me in running. It was a long emotional run but it made me truly understand how running can heal. Today's run I had a lot of thoughts going through my head. A lot of the run was wondering what I had done at work and why I was not being considered for the next level. I had to realize it was not me, it is what it is and I had to continue to do what I do... be dedicated to the project and give my best to succeed.... Today's run, healed the sadness that I had been having for the last few weeks and get myself ready to move on..

It has been a long time since I have had that feeling while running and I am glad I had this time. Today's eight miles was close to 2 hours of quality time with me. I now totally understand the part of the movie in Forest Gump where Forest just kept on running and running and running. The pain and ache of the run just hit the pavement every mile I ran. Near the end of the run, I wanted to smile and move on, so I started to think of silly things.. I took a line from my next month's workout and started to sing the alphabet backwards.. I didn't get that far before I started to laugh.. I was start out with z,y,x w,v, u, t and giggle. So, I would try again. This will be my new silly time... who knows, I think by the time I run the half marathon, I can make it to A.

This speedy turtle is getting better and learning more about herself. Thank you run for listening to me and letting me vent.

Happy Training,
Eling

Blue Turtle Triathlete...

Well, last week was one of those weeks that I just had too many thoughts and doubts going through my head that I was a blue turtle. I didn't want to run, swim or bike. I was just plan blue.. So, what do I do? I actually checked in with my coach and things starting looking up. She was there for me to sound out my doubts and thoughts and the day got better! Thank you Lesley!

But what really helped was my run.. The very next day, after I talked to Lesley, I went for a run and it was amazing. I forgot how much a good relaxing run can feel. So, in the future, this blue turtle will go for a run to become the Speedy Turtle Triathlete again!

Turning into a popsicle..

Today I had to go for a 45 min easy run... It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and there was no clouds in the sky.. so, little me.. a girl from So. Calif, said.."I have to go for a run, it is soo beautiful!"

Little did I know that I would turn into a Popsicle.. You see.. the weather was 41 degrees with winds so it felt like 30 degrees..

At first, it wasn't too bad and I thought, I will warm  up. I never warmed up! My legs just got colder and colder as I ran.. I was on my way home and my hubby pulled up in a warm car and said... "See you at home and raced away..." I soo wanted to get into his car..but I didn't. I ran home and went into a warm house.

Here is a picture of me after the run:
See, I wasn't dressed for the fashion. I tried to dress up warmly..

So, this little speedy turtle was a frozen popsicle turtle.

Tracking...

Hmm... I just started tracking my weight.. boy is that hard. Luckily, I am using the an app on my iPad that makes it easier - Livestrong Calorie Tracker..... last year Billy suggested this app and I lost weight and then I stopped tracking because.. well.. I had lost weight and I thought I could do it on my own.... BOY was I WRONG... I stopped using the app and I maintained and stopped losing weight...

So here we are again a new year... I still need to lose 30 more pounds..but I will take 10.. small goal. I am tracking my food and I am always amazed at how much I can eat without even knowing how many calories is in the food. Tracking food keeps you accountable. Also, all those fad diets don't work.. the real success is all in math... calories in/calories out and you will lose weight....

So, I am still investing in myself and trying to track my food and exercise to lose weight!..

P.S. Exercise allows me to eat more..So, I will keep doing my workout!

Happy Food tracking!

The treadmill and I now are friends......

For the last year during my training, I have always hated the thought of getting on the treadmill. My feet hurt, my legs hurt, I go slow and I just felt like a concrete log clopping on the treadmill... In fact, just two weeks ago, I completed a 5K test on the treadmill and it was like I was fighting every step to stay faster.. I finished that in 36:49 but like I said, I felt like my legs were concrete logs clopping on the treadmill.

This week, this all changed.... I have made amends with the treadmill and I had a great run.. I just got the new Garmin foot pod so I had to calibrate it. I did 10 minute warm-up at a comfortable pace (12:30 min/mile) and got the foot pod calibrated.. then I was getting ready with my ipod to run the BRC (Bartlett Rec Center) track and my battery was dead.. So, I had a choice, run with no music or hop on the treadmill and listen to music while the ipod charged.. I like my music when I run, so on the treadmill I go.  I started out slowly and started to increase my speed...See I had to run 30 minutes in Zone 3 for my heart rate > 144 bpm.. I started out at a 12:30 pace.. heart rate was in zone 2 and nowhere close to zone 3.. increased the speed to 12.. still in zone 2, my legs felt great! I felt like I was running outside..increased the speed to 11:45, still in zone 2, I was feeling great, so I increased the speed and pushed it to 11 min/mile and I was still in zone 2.. so I pushed it to 10:30 min/mile..OMG.. I hadn't gone this fast is such a long time.. I was ecstatic.. I hit zone 3 and stayed there for a little while and then I was losing my breath and slowed down back to 11:00 min/mile. I made friends with the treadmill..It is nice to run on the treadmill...I sent my data to Lesley and she too was amazed.. my cadence is exactly where it needs to be.. I never knew about cadence on running until we talked and  I just need to keep doing what I am doing.. Lesley has been so great! I love working with her....

So for now, I like the treadmill.. hopefully, tomorrow, we will still be friends, as I have to run for an hour....

Happy Training,
Eling

Back to full time training...

Ugh... today I went back to the early morning workouts... It is amazing how I really liked sleep..

I was sound asleep like a baby and at 4:32 - to be exact... I got whacked in the nose by my hubby telling me to get up.. begrudgingly, I got out of bed.. you see, not only do I have to get back to training, I had to take my son to morning practice.. Into my workout clothes and off to the pool...

Today was a new routine.. my workout entailed that I complete 12x100. Now that seems a lot.. but Lesley gave me some variety.. I was able to split this up into 3  4x100 with the first one being 4x100 IM set.. yeah something different! I was a sight... I think I was a drowning turtle completing the butterfly.. Haha... actually, I was surprised.. I survived the 4x100 IM set.. finished the other sets and swam a total of 1800 yards.. tomorrow is a new day and it is back on the bike trainer..

Now it is time for bed.. I think I will sleep like a baby....And  snore like a speedy turtle triathlete..

Happy Training,
Eling
